If you follow any of my online activity, you will probably be aware that I am a regular Reading Tweetup goer. Inspired by my friend James Marshall and his UK Tweetup-Map project, I thought it would be fun to see how other tweetups around the UK are run and meet lots of fun twitter users in the process.
Last night I attended the 5th Tuesday Tweetup in Southampton. In many ways the event was very similar to the tweetups we run in Reading. Like us, they had a dedicated space, just for the tweetup - always good to know you can walk up to anyone and start talking without them thinking you’re crazy! The folks were friendly and open to chatting, there were photographs being taken, beers consumed and lots of waxing lyrical about the power of Twitter and social media in general.
On the flip side, the Tuesday Tweetup had some marked differences. The twiteratti of Southampton do not meet nearly as often as us Redingensians. In Reading we have been meeting every two weeks like clockwork since March. This means there is no pressure or guilt if you can’t make it to one - there will be another tweetup before you know it! This gives us different crowds each time and a number of attendees between 20 and 30. Tuesday Tweetup takes place only every few months and the date for the next one is never advertised so there is a lot more incentive to turn up so the crowd was larger. There must have been around 40 - 50 people at Southampton’s Piano Bar in Dock Gate 4 last night.
I’d like to thank Lisa (@Tuesdaytweeup) for such a warm welcome and make mention of @CatStormont, she raised an impressive sum of money for the Salisbury Green Brownies selling their hand made Christmas cook books (I can’t wait to make the rocky road crunch bars!). After meeting such nice folks in Southampton, I look forward to visiting other tweetups around the UK soon.
